Fun Friday, Part II – The Nobel Peace Prize

How funny is this? When I read the news about the Nobel Peace Prize this morning I couldn’t stop laughing and I’ve been thinking so hard, what has Obama done to deserve this Nobel Peace Prize?

I thought the Nobel Peace Prize is that they are about achievement (I like to hope it is for good achievement, but after Al Gore . . . I don’t know anymore!). The more and more I think about it, well, is not really Obama’s fault that he wins the Nobel Peace Prize or whether or not he deserves it or the fact that we still have war in the womb, but how idiotic the Peace Prize Committees are! Are they desperate? Is ACORN in the committee? Is it the hope & change thing? Did they feel sorry for him because he didn’t win the Olympic bids for 2016? But, it can’t be the Olympic thing, because the committee voted on February 1st 2009, two weeks after he took office. 

I couldn’t come up with anything and my conclusion is, the Peace Prize Committees has lowered their standard and has cheapening the purpose of the award!

A Turtle Amongst The Chickens

My sister-in-law said it best, “you are on your way to being called, farmer-mike”. After the chickens, today I surprised the girls by bringing a land-turtle home. I found this little guy crossing the street because he thought the grass was greener on the other side. Although he was close to meeting his Creator, because I almost ran him over with my car!

What should we call him (or her)?

Yippee . . . Our First Egg!

Nothing can compare than finding an egg inside the coop. Gabriela’s chicken laid the first egg for our family. The chicken was not even trained to lay the egg on her nest yet, she just laid it on the grass.They were so happy and if I remembered the girls even did the egg dance, or maybe it was me who did the egg dance!

Here Are The Chickens

We went to the chicken farm, Birdsong Community Farm in Cullman, Alabama last Friday to buy the chickens for our backyard chicken coop and the girls got to pick out (and named) their own chickens that they like. We had a good experience buying the chickens from Joshua, he really knows his chickens, thank you Joshua for your help!

	Abigail picked a Cochin and named her Goldie
	Rebecca picked a Wyandotte and named her Zebree (the chicken looks like a zebra)
	Gabriela picked a New Hampshire Red and named her Chickadee

We picked one for Christiana too and it is the Ameraucana and named her Rusty, because it has a rusty looking color.

The Project: Chicken Coop

The moment that everyone’s been waiting for . . . I finally finished the big project and it took me a little bit over two days to build this chicken coop and about a week to finalized the details and paint, which Coby and the girls helped with the paint.

I have to say, it turned out better than I expected. I will be taking orders who ever needs one, just let me know!

We are going to raise some backyard chickens for the eggs.

During the day, the chicken will be on the bottom part of the coop and at night time on top. On top level includes the nest boxes and place for them to roost

Fruit From A Far Land

Since there is so much news from my birth land, Indonesia lately: First, the baby boy weight at 19 pounds at birth, and second, the 7.6 magnitude earthquake.
On a lighter note, can you believe we could buy fruit that I used to eat when I lived in Indonesia, a fruit call Durian (pronounce doo-ree-uhn). Out of all the places, who would’ve thought you could buy Durian in Alabama. So, after 28 years, I was eating durian last night . . . and it was yummy!

Back To Wood

Bud’s Best Cookies Tour

As part of the homeschooling program, the teacher (that would be Coby) took the girls to a Bud’s Best Cookies facility. They got to see how the cookies are being made by riding in an indoor train, and they also got some free cookies as part of the tour. And the real highlight of the tour was they had to wear a hair net covering on their head, and the girls thought that was the coolest thing. Well, they’ve corrected me, the highlight was riding the train and getting some warm cookies in the cup.

I’m sure this is a dream of every iPhone users to have an iPhone that will do this.

But then, I guess I can keep on dreaming!

Another Milestone

When you look at this picture, you may be thinking . . . “oh no”, they are letting their daughter be an alter “girl” server (although alter girls are approved by the Church), however we do believe strongly an alter server should be “boys” for the sake of nurturing their possible vocation to the priesthood. And we do  believe that there are places for girls to take part in Holy Mass, such as being in the choir.

Gabriela has joined and has been practicing in the girls choir at our parish, Our Lady of Sorrows. Her debut singing in the choir was today at the 8:30 am Holy Mass. It was so beautiful and very touching to see that our little girl is doing something that she loves to do and at the same time praising God through her singing, and she looks so cute in her choir outfit.

Reading Time With Grandma

I have to say, this is a very rare moment to see Grandma read a story book to Abigail. I love to see the two of them just sat on the couch, Grandma was reading and Abigail was just listening while sucking her thumb.

Since I’m an automotive guy and enjoy my iPhone, I’m in favor for this new hybrid Lexus LF-Ch Concept sports car. This is only a concept, and we don’t know if Lexus will really put this out in the market. This Lexus concept car was at the Frankfurt Auto Show.

Once upon a time someone had told me, “the more children you have the easier it becomes.” Well, I have to say it is somewhat true. Today Gabriela turns 8 years old and we had a birthday party for her last Sunday, and she . . .

. . . decorated her own cake

and . . . organized “pin the nose on the clown” game.

Junior Master Gardener

Gabriela has enrolled in the Junior Master Gardener (An international youth gardening program of the University Extension network) and attended the first class at the Aldridge Gardens last week. JMG mission is: to grow good kids by igniting a passion for learning, success and service through a unique gardening education.She has her own 15 square foot plot of garden that she will be responsible of taking care of it through out the duration of the program. She could grow any vegetables or plants and at the same time learn how to grow and care of them. She loves it!

We will be updating this blog from time to time with the progress of her garden plot at the Aldridge Gardens or if you are in the area, you are welcome to visit her garden plot (behind the pavilion), and it’s marked with her name on the upside-down clay pot.
